UPDATE: As per the developing news, tariffs were postponed by 30 days.
The Government of Canada has announced the implementation of 25% tariffs on $30 billion worth of goods imported from the United States, effective February 4, 2025. These measures are in direct response to U.S. tariffs imposed on Canadian products.
Scope of the Tariffs
The tariffs apply exclusively to goods originating from the United States. Eligibility is determined based on the Determination of Country of Origin for the Purposes of Marking Goods (CUSMA Countries) Regulations. Only products that qualify as U.S.-origin goods under these regulations will be subject to the additional duties.
Duration and Implementation
-
Effective Date: The tariffs take effect immediately on February 4, 2025.
-
Duration: These countermeasures will remain in place until the U.S. removes its tariffs on Canadian goods.
-
Exemption for Goods in Transit: U.S. products that are already in transit to Canada before the tariffs take effect will be exempt.
Administration and Compliance
Businesses importing affected products should consult Canada’s Customs Tariff Schedule to understand the specific tariff classifications. Additional guidance on the administration of these tariffs is available through the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) under the Customs Notices section.
